Writing

Kareem writes on a range of topics for different media outlets. His current (2018/19) projects include essays on the practice and theory of translation, a lengthy journalistic piece about a collection of Buddhist relics uncovered in India, and a book-length ghost-writing/editing project on cutting-edge leadership practices in the field of international education.

Kareem's book The Poetics of Adonis and Yves Bonnefoy: Poetry as Spiritual Practice, which is adapted from his PhD dissertation, is forthcoming (2019) from Lockwood Press in the Resources in Arabic and Islamic Studies series.

Dissertation

Kareem has completed one full-length book, his PhD dissertation in Comparative Literature at UC Berkeley:
  • Poetry as Spiritual Practice: The Poetics of Adonis and Yves Bonnefoy. Originally published online by Proquest, 2016. 152 pages.
  • A revised version of this, entitled The Poetics of Adonis and Yves Bonnefoy: Poetry as Spiritual Practice, is forthcoming (2019) from Lockwood Press in the Resources in Arabic and Islamic Studies series.

Essays on Translation

Kareem is currently writing a series of essays entitled “The Tasks of the (Arabic) Translator,” which looks at the craft of translation from a variety of angles. These essays will be published monthly in 2019 on the Arabic Literature (in English) website. Links to the essays will be posted here as they become available.
