Kareem James Abu-Zeid has worked as a freelance translator from French to English ever since the year 2000, when, as an 18-year-old undergraduate French major at Princeton University, he worked for three months one summer translating marketing materials for a French yacht chartering company based in Paris.
Kareem has translated one full-length book of poetry from the French:
Chaos, Crossing, by Olivia Elias (French-language poet of the Palestinian diaspora), published in November 2022 by World Poetry Books, in a bilingual French-English edition, with a Foreword by Najwan Darwish. This book was a Finalist for the 2024 Sarah Maguire Prize for Poetry in Translation and was also selected as one of World Literature Today's 75 Notable Translations of 2022.

- The scholarly journal Afriques.
- The Journal of Vietnamese Studies (University of California Press).
- The European Journal for the History of Medicine and Health.
- Individual professors from North America, Europe, and Asia.
From 2015 to 2017, he was hired by MoMA as Senior Translating Editor to edit and verify the accuracy of preexisting French translations for an anthology of essays on modern art.
