Editing
Kareem has been working as a freelance editor of texts in American English and British English since 2004, for institutions and individual clients around the globe. He has edited tens of thousands of pages of text over the years, including books of fiction and creative non-fiction as well as scholarly books, essays, dissertations, art history texts, conference presentations, film subtitles, and much more.
Kareem is also frequently employed to edit and revise preexisting translations of modern and classical Arabic texts, working to improve both the accuracy of the translation and the literary quality / readability. For this kind of work, he is usually employed by the publishing house, the translators themselves, the literary agent involved, or the original author of the texts being translated. - From 2015 to 2017, Kareem was Senior Translating Editor at MoMA for the book project Modern Art in the Arab World: Primary Documents (464 pages) where he edited the work of a large team of French and Arabic translators.
- Language and Translation Editor for the book Genealogy of Popular Science: From Ancient Ecphrasis to Virtual Reality (transcript Verlag, Bielefeld 2021; 584 pages).
- Since 2007, Kareem has been a regular freelance editor for English-language texts and books for the Centre for Cultural and General Studies in Karlsruhe, as well as for its parent organization, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
- From 2013 to 2016, Kareem was an Editor and Senior Consultant for ATP Germany, a Hamburg-based editing and translation company.
